Rethinking AI Governance as Your Competitive Edge

Tuesday March 11, 2026
16:35 - 17:20, The Next Tech Frontier, Executive Day

Talk Description:
As AI scales across the enterprise, the biggest risk isn't too little governance, it's too much of the wrong kind.

In this hands-on breakout, Roel opened with a example where governance can go sideways: AI sustainability requirements that created a false balance between AI-specific emissions and total enterprise impact, slowing adoption without meaningful environmental gain.

Senior tech leaders from different sectors then worked through three provocative questions: Is your governance making the right choice the easy choice? Is it solving problems or burying them under bureaucracy? And what would happen if you cut AI governance in half?

The session drew double the available spots, and the discussions reflected that energy. What emerged was that "bureaucracy" means very different things depending on your sector and even your department. Governance teams across the board are playing catch-up with the pace of AI adoption, but that pace itself varies wildly between stakeholders within the same organization. And the real challenge isn't writing an AI policy. It's building everything around it: change management, literacy, and aligning people on direction. Some participants already have policies in place, others are finalizing, others are still designing, but all are grappling with the same question: how to make governance keep up without slowing everything down.
